South Carolina Contractors License & Exam Prep
Obtain or Renew Your License in South Carolina
Work over $5,000 requires a contractor license in South Carolina. Contractor licenses are governed by two boards. The Residential Builders Commission issues licenses for all residential contractors. The Contractors Licensing Board is responsible for the issuing and oversight of General and Mechanical Contractors, who are permitted to bid for and contract residential, commercial, industrial, and government work.
General and Mechanical licenses are divided into five "Groups". Groups 1 through 4 are considered "limited" and have corresponding financial limits and requirements. Group 5 is the "unlimited" classification and have no financial limits but the highest financial requirements. In addition to completing the eligibility requirements for becoming a General or Mechanical Contractor, you will also need to pass a trade exam (such as Electrical / Masonry).
