South Carolina Electrical Contractor License
Electrical Contractor Licensing & Exam Prep
South Carolina requires a Mechanical Contractor license with Electrical sub-classification before any bidding or electrical work can take place. All applicants must pass the Business Management & Law exam in addition to one of the Electrician exams offered in South Carolina.
Applicants can elect to sit for either the South Carolina Electrical Contractor Exam or the NASCLA Accredited Exam, both offered by PSI. The board divides Electrical Contractor licenses into 5 groups. Each group denotes the financial limits and requirements of the licensee.

Electrical Mechanical Contractor
The Electrical sub-classification allows South Carolina Mechanical Contractors perform electrical work including, but not limited to, installations and repairs on systems up to 600 volts, indoor and outdoor lighting and required equipment, as well as window and through-the-wall air conditioning units under 3 tons/3 HP which require no piping. Each license Group has financial limits per bid and job, as follows:
Group 1: $17,500
Group 2: $50,000
Group 3: $100,000
Group 4: $200,000
Group 5: UNLIMITED
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Exams- Pass NASCLA or SC Electrical Contractor Exam
- Pass NASCLA Business Management & Law Exam
FinancialGAAP Financial Statements Showing Net Worth of:
Self Prepared Balance Sheet
- Group 1: $3,500 or $7,000 Surety Bond
- Group 2: $10,000 or $20,000 Surety Bond
CPA/PA Compiled or Prepared GAAP Financial Statement
- Group 3: $20,000 or $40,000 Surety Bond
- Group 4: $40,000 or $80,000 Surety Bond
CPA/PA Audited
- Group 5: $200,000 or $400,000 Surety Bond
Experience- Submit 2 years of full-time, hands-on field work within the past 5 years. Only commercial work is accepted.
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the South Carolina CLB at 803-896-4686 or visit Contractor License Board.
The state does not require continuing education prior to each renewal. Also, South Carolina has reciprocity agreements with some states. A complete list of their reciprocity agreements can be found here.

All applicants must take the Business & Law Exam, but you may choose between two electrical exam options:
The state-specific exam OR the NASCLA Accredited Electrical Exam

How do I pass the exam?
The South Carolina exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
