South Carolina Air Conditioning Contractor License
Air Conditioning Contractor Licensing & Exam Prep
South Carolina requires all Air Conditioning Contractors to obtain a Mechanical Contractor license with Air Conditioning sub-classification before any bidding or Air Conditioning work can take place. The Business & Law test accompanies this exam as a requirement for licensure.

Air Conditioning Mechanical Contractor
The Air Conditioning sub-classification allows South Carolina Mechanical Contractors perform all Air Conditioning work within private property lines and allows for the installation and repair of appliances related to water supply. Licensees are permitted to install all necessary parts to convey waste from the premises and connect to public utilities as allowed by utility owners. Each license Group has financial limits per bid and job, as follows:
Group 1: $17,500
Group 2: $50,000
Group 3: $100,000
Group 4: $200,000
Group 5: UNLIMITED

- Pass NASCLA Business Management & Law Exam

Self Prepared Balance Sheet
- Group 1: $3,500 or $7,000 Surety Bond
- Group 2: $10,000 or $20,000 Surety Bond
CPA/PA Compiled or Prepared GAAP Financial Statement
- Group 3: $20,000 or $40,000 Surety Bond
- Group 4: $40,000 or $80,000 Surety Bond
CPA/PA Audited
- Group 5: $200,000 or $400,000 Surety Bond
Experience- Submit 2 years of full-time, hands-on field work within the past 5 years. Only commercial work is accepted.
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the South Carolina CLB at 803-896-4686 or visit Contractor License Board.
The state does not require continuing education prior to each renewal. Also, South Carolina has reciprocity agreements with some states. A complete list of their reciprocity agreements can be found here.
