Burglar / Fire Alarm Contractor Licensing & Exam Prep

Fire Alarm Contractor License
License holders are permitted to design, install, service, maintain, or alter fire alarm systems.

Burglar Alarm Contractor License
License holders are permitted to design, install, service, maintain, or alter burglar alarm systems, including burglar alarm systems with an electric fence, and heat and smoke sensors installed within a burglar alarm system. A burglar alarm system detects intrusion, burglary, and breaking or entering but does not include home health care signaling devices.
What are the requirements to getting a license?

and/or
Experience Requirements- Submit 2 years of full-time, hands-on field work within the past 5 years. Only commercial work is accepted.
General Requirements- Pay all fees
- Certificate of Liability Insurance listing the SC Contractors' Licensing Board as the certificate holder
- Completed document 130 (initial license application), including:
- NTS Level 1 certificate of completion for burglar alarms and fire alarms, or
- NICET Level 2 certificate of completion for fire alarms
- Criminal background check for the entity's principal officers, all qualifying parties, and registered employees for all states in which the individual has lived within the past 10 years
- Certificate of comprehensive general liability insurance providing for the following minimum coverage:
- $100,000 due to bodily injury, death, or destruction of property as the result of the negligent act of acts of principal insured
- The policy must be purchased from an insurer or licensed agent authorized to do business in South Carolina

The state does not require continuing education prior to each renewal. South Carolina has reciprocity no agreements with other states for alarm contractor licenses.

Which exam do I need to take?
All applicants must pass the Alarm Code of Laws Exam. Depending on the type of license you are applying for, you must also pass the Fire Alarm Exam and/or Burglar Alarm Exam.

How do I pass the exam?
