What type of work can be done with this license?

Contracting
This exam is required by the state to obtain any type of Contractor license. Some contracting under $25,000 can be done without a contracting license in certain areas.

Specialty Certifications
The state recognizes 34 building Categories that an individual can be specialized in. Any combination of up to 5 categories may be obtained by passing the Business and Law exam alone. Some categories have financial limitations as well.

- $100,000 coverage is required for monetary limits up to $500,000

DocumentationSubmit the following:
- CPA/PA prepared financial statements
- Letter of Reference as proof of work and trade experience
- Completed, signed, and notarized application package
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance at 615-741-2241 or visit the Tennessee board of licensing contractors website to submit online.
Residential contractors are required to have continuing education. Reciprocity agreements exist for a variety of license classifications / States.

Next you will need to obtain all required insurance and contact a CPA or PA to prepare financial statements.
After completing all the steps above, it will be time to apply through CORE to obtain your Tennessee Contractors License. If a corporation or limited liability company, visit the Tennessee Secretary of State website for information on business filings. How do I pass the exam?
The Tennessee exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
