Tennessee Contractors License & Exam Prep
Obtain or Renew Your Tennessee Contractor's License
A contractor's license is required in Tennessee for construction project's over $25,000. A Tennessee contractor license is also required for all plumbing and electrical work. Most license classifications in Tennessee will require passing two exams: business and law exam, and the construction/trade exam. Certain licenses in Tennessee (such as roofing, fuel gas, framing, drywall & more) can be obtained by passing only the business and law exam, whereas the limited license electrician and limited license plumber classifications will only require the passing of a trade exam. The Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors is responsible for setting the requirements and administering licenses. Obtain Or Renew Your Tennessee Contractor License

A Residential Contractor (BC-A) is limited to construction and remodeling of one, two, three and four family residences that do not exceed three stories in height.
Applicants must pass the BC-A Residential Contractor Exam.

A Residential Small Commercial Contractor (BC-A,b) is limited to residential structures ranging from one to four family residences not exceeding three stories in height, as well as commercial projects not exceeding $1,500,000.

This license permits individuals to bid on and oversee the construction, alteration, or demolition of any building used by the public, including residential construction. It also covers industrial construction, such as manufacturing plants. However, it excludes electrical, HVAC, and plumbing projects exceeding $25,000.

Commercial Contractor (BC-B) licensees are able to work on commercial construction projects over three stories in height and residential projects with more than 4 units.

A Restricted Residential Contractor (BC-A/r) is able to construct, remodel, and repair a single family dwelling. The work performed by these contractors cannot exceed their monetary limit of $125,000. There is no exam for this license, only a course taken through a community college.

The LMC Masony Contractor License permits the licensee to construct buildings from individual units of brick, stone, or concrete and glass block laid in and bound together by mortar, where the total cost of the masonry portion of the construction project exceeds one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000), materials and labor.
