The Limited Residential Contractor License (BC-A/r) is perfect for contractors handling projects under $125,000, including labor and materials. Unlike the Residential Contractor License (BC-A), the Limited Residential Contractor License does not require an exam. Instead, applicants must complete a training course through a community college, such as the one offered by Volunteer State Community College in partnership with RocketCert. Applicants must still meet all licensing requirements and submit a complete application to the Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors.
This license allows contractors to take on single-family residential construction, remodeling, and repair projects. For those starting their contracting career or looking to expand their services, this license provides an accessible pathway to success in Tennessee's residential construction industry. This license allows licensees to bid on and contract work for construction, remodeling, repair, or improvement projects of a single-family dwelling. The cost of these projects with all labor and materials cannot be more than $125,000.
For many jobs, a Limited Residential license will not suffice, and a Residential Contractor License will be necessary. This license allows for the construction, remodeling, repair or improvement of up to four family unit residences, not exceeding three stories in height and additional structures.
To apply for your license, contact the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance at 615-741-2241 or visit the Tennessee board of licensing contractors website to submit online.
