Plumbing Contractors (CMC-A) are able to do work involving installation, repair, alterations, remodeling, or removal of various plumbing systems including water supply, waste, storm drainage, and non-medical gas piping.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
TestingPass 2 exams with 73% on each
- Tennessee Business and Law
- Plumbing Contractor Exam
Schedule testing for exams through the PSI website or call 1-855-746-8173 (pre-approval is required for CMC-A exam)
Insurance- General Liability (based on monetary license limits)
- $100,000 coverage is required for monetary limits up to $500,000
- $500,000 coverage is required for monetary limits up to $500,001 - $1,500,000
- $1,000,00 coverage is required for monetary limits greater than $1,500,000
- Worker’s Compensation
DocumentationSubmit the following:
- CPA/PA prepared financial statements
- Verification of at least 3 years experience of plumbing work
- Letter of Reference
- Completed, signed, and notarized application package
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance at 615-741-2241 or visit the Tennessee board of licensing contractors website to submit online.
Tennessee does not require continuing education for this license. Tennessee has reciprocity agreements with Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, and the NASCLA National Exam.

After studying with RocketCert, you will be on your way to passing the required State exam(s) (see below). Pre-approval can be obtained by filing a Tennessee Plumbing Exam Pre-Approval Request with the Board for Licensing Contractors. Once approved, applicants may schedule a time and date to take the exam. Contact PSI at 855-746-8173 to schedule. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities.
Next you will need to obtain all required insurance and contact a CPA or PA to prepare financial statements.

Tennessee Contractors must pass two examinations: Plumbing Contractor and Business Law Exam.
CMC-A Mechanical Plumbing Contractor Exam

- Time allowed: 295 minutes

- Topics Include: General Knowledge and Math; General Requirements (not including Gas)- Administrative, Structural, Backflow, Materials and Supports, Joints, and Connections, Storm Drains, Testing; Water Supply and Distribution; Fixtures, including Water Heaters; Drain, Waste, and Vent Systems, including Indirect and Special Waster; Traps, Cleanouts, and Interceptors; Isometric Analysis; Gas Appliances and Piping; OSHA Safety.

- Number of questions: 50
- Passing Score: 37 correct
- Time allowed: 140 minutes

How do I pass the exam?
The Tennessee exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
