What type of work can be done with this license?

Licensed Contractor in Tennessee
  • Contracting

    This exam is required by the state to obtain any type of Contractor license. Some contracting under $25,000 can be done without a contracting license in certain areas.

  • Specialty Certifications

    The state recognizes 34 building Categories that an individual can be specialized in. Any combination of up to 5 categories may be obtained by passing the Business and Law exam alone. Some categories have financial limitations as well.

How do I obtain a license?

To apply for your license, contact the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance at 615-741-2241 or visit the Tennessee board of licensing contractors website to submit online.

Residential contractors are required to have continuing education. Reciprocity agreements exist for a variety of license classifications / States.

After completing all the steps above, it will be time to apply through CORE to obtain your Tennessee Contractors License. If a corporation or limited liability company, visit the Tennessee Secretary of State website for information on business filings.

Online Exam Prep
Residential Contractor (BC-A)
This license allows for the construction, remodeling, repair or improvement of up to four family unit residences, not exceeding three stories in height and additional structures.
Residential / Small Commercial Contractor (BC-A, b)
This license allows for the construction, remodeling, repair or improvement of up to four family unit residences, not exceeding three stories in height and additional structures. The licensee is also authorized to bid on and contract for the construction, erection, alteration, repair or demolition of any building or structure for use and occupancy by the general public, however the total cost of that project cannot exceed $1,500,000.
Residential / Commercial / Industrial Contractor (BC)
This license allows licensees to bid on and contract for the construction, erection, alteration, repair or demolition of any building or structure for use and occupancy by the general public, including residential construction. Additionally, under this license is the construction of industrial structures such as manufacturing plants. All electrical, HVAC, and plumbing work above $25,000 are excluded.

Commercial Contractor (BC-B)
This license allows licensees to bid on and contract to construct, erect, alter, repair, or demolish any building or structure for occupancy and use by the general public. This includes residential construction with more than 4 units or higher than 3 stories.
Electrical Contractor (CE)
This license allows you to perform electrical work including wiring of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings and structures; all types of low voltage work, electrical temperature controls, fire detection systems, signal and burglar alarms, roadway lighting, attenuators, and signalization.
Limited Licensed Electrician (LLE)
This license allows licensees to perform electrical work of less than $25,000 in certain municipalities.
Alarm Systems Contractor
This license allows licensees to work on fire alarm systems, burglar alarms, and/or closed circuit television (CCTV).
Plumbing Contractor (CMC-A)
This license allows licensees to do work involving installation, repair, alterations, remodeling, or removal of various plumbing systems including water supply, waste, storm drainage, and non-medical gas piping.
Limited Licensed Plumber (LLP)
This license allows licensees to perform plumbing work of less than $25,000 in certain municipalities.
Mechanical Contractor (CMC)
This license allows licensees to perform all plumbing, process piping, HVAC, refrigeration, sprinklers & fire protection, boilers, fuel gas piping, temperature controls, insulation, and pollution control work.
HVAC/R Contractor (CMC-C)
This license allows licensees to bid work to install and maintain equipment for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, gas piping, and geothermal.
Masonry Contractor (LMC)
This license is for licensees who build structures from individual units of brick, stone, or concrete and glass block laid in and bound together by mortar, where the total cost of the masonry portion of the construction project exceeds one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000), materials and labor, and who is required to obtain a license as a licensed masonry contractor by the board.
Restricted Residential Contractor (BC-A/r)
This license allows licensees to bid on and contract work for construction, remodeling, repair, or improvement projects of a single-family dwelling. The cost of these projects with all labor and materials cannot be more than $125,000.
