Michigan Plumbing License & Exam Prep
Journey, Master, and Contractor Plumber Licensing
Michigan Plumbers are regulated by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. They govern licensure for Journey, Master, and Contractor Plumbers. Requirements for obtaining each type of license can be found below.

What type of work can be done with this license?

Journey Plumber
After completing the required plumbing apprenticeship, applicants may choose to become a Journey Plumber, which serves as a foundation for becoming either a Master Plumber or Plumbing contractor in Michigan.

Master Plumber
Prior to applying, Master Plumbers must complete an additional 4,000 hours as a Journey Plumber. Master Plumbers may supervise or train Journey and apprentice plumbers.

Plumbing Contractor
Plumbing Contractors may focus more on bidding and contracting plumbing jobs. They require the same amount of experience as Master Plumbers, but must also provide proof of being an owner or officer of a plumbing business in the state of Michigan.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Rule 5 (1) of MI Admin Code 338.925 - "The character, experience, and fitness of the applicants shall also be taken into consideration. The board and department may investigate any applicant, or application filed, and approve or disapprove the same."
Journey Plumber- Be at least 18 years of age
- Provide a notarized statement from present or former employers attesting that the applicant has at least 6,000 hours of experience gained over a period of not less than 3 years as a registered apprentice in the practical installation of plumbing under the supervision of a master plumber
- Applicants that have graduated a recognized trade school may substitute the education for 2,000 of the required 6,000 experience hours
- Submit a complete application with notarized supporting documents
- Upon application approval, applicants may schedule a time and date to sit for the Michigan Journey Plumbing exam
Master Plumber- Have on record with the board at least 4,000 hours as a licensed Journey Plumber over at least the 2 years immediately prior to application date
- Submit a complete application with notarized supporting documents
- Upon application approval, applicants may schedule a time and date to sit for the Michigan Master Plumbing exam
Plumbing Contractor- Provide documentation of applicants' residence address, business address, or employment information for the last 5 years along with conviction history information outlined in the form provided by the department
- Submit a complete application and notarized supporting documents verifying the current business structure of the applicant. Each business structure has specific required documents
- Upon application approval, applicants may schedule a time and date to sit for the Michigan Plumbing Contractor exam
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs at 517-335-9700 or visit the LARA website to submit online.
Michigan requires 5 hours of continuing education for this license. Michigan may allow applicants reciprocity if a license and experience in another state is deemed sufficient by a quorum of the board. In such instances, applicants will still be required to pass the required exam.

Michigan Journeyman Plumber Exam
- Number of questions: 125
- Passing Score: 70% correct
- Time: 180 minutes
- OPEN BOOK
- Topics Include: Drainage Systems, Vent Systems, Fixtures, Water Distribution, Backflow Prevention, Special Waste Systems, Testing and Inspections. Also included is the ability to gather information from an isometric drawing representing the practical side of plumbing
Michigan Master Plumber Exam
- Number of questions: 130
- Passing Score: 70% correct
- Time: 180 minutes

- Topics Include: Knowledge of the Skilled Trades Regulations Act, 2016 PA 407, any rules promulgated under this act, the Stille-Derossett-Hale single state construction code act (1972 PA 230) and the administration and enforcement procedures of the Michigan Plumbing Code

- Passing Score: 70% correct
- Time: 120 minutes

- Topics Include: Knowledge of Skilled Trades Regulations act, 2016 PA 407 and any rules promulgated therein; Stille-Derossett-Hale Single State Construction Code Act (1972 PA 230); Administration and Enforcement Procedures of the Michigan Plumbing Code
How do I pass the exam?
The Michigan exams are open book. The references below are permitted to used during your test! All reference materials must be bound. The materials printed from the BCC website must be bound by 3 staples on the left edge in separate documents. Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
The exam prep includes math, isometrics, study guides covering the topics your exam is based on, practice questions for each reference, and unlimited attempts on our "test simulation".
