Journeyman Electrician
A Journeyman Electrician in Kentucky can refer to a person, firm, or corporation. They are described as one who, by the employment of journeymen or apprentices, performs the work of installing, repairing or maintaining wires, conduits, apparatus, devices, fixtures or other appliances used for light, heat, power, fire warning or security system purposes. Each Journeyman may only have one apprentice under their supervision. The Master may also do electrical work themselves.

Master Electrician
A Master Electrician in Kentucky can refer to a person, firm, or corporation. Electrical Contractor
In Kentucky, an Electrical Contractor can perform electrical work for the public. Only licensed electrical contractors may request electrical permits. All electrical Contractors must employ at least one Master Electrician.
What are the electrical licensing requirements?
Electrical License- Pay the application and exam fees
- 2 years of verifiable experience in the electrical trade since your 16th birthday
- A training course in electrical work, acceptable to the department
- 2 years of a minimum 4 year training course in electrical work and shall complete the remaining years of that training course within 4 years of obtaining the electrician license, or the electrician license shall be revoked;
- Or an additional 2 years of verifiable experience in the electrical trade
- Pass the Kentucky Electrical Exam
Master Electrical License- Pay all application and exam fees
- Pass the Kentucky Electrical Exam
- 6 years of verifiable experience in the electrical trade since his or her sixteenth birthday; and
- A training course in electrical work, acceptable to the department, or an additional 2 years of verifiable experience in the electrical trade
- 5 years of verifiable experience in the electrical trade since his or her sixteenth birthday; and
- An associate's degree or diploma program in electrical technology at a college within the Kentucky Community and Technical College System after 1998

Electrical Contractor License- Pass Electrical and Business and Law exams
- Proof you are in compliance with workers' compensation and unemployment insurance laws
- Minimum $500,000 liability insurance
- Once approved by the Board, complete a State and Federal Background Check prior to sitting for the examination.
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings, and Construction at 502-573-0365 or visit dhbc.ky.gov.
Kentucky requires each licensee to complete Continuing education prior to each renewal. Kentucky has reciprocity agreements with Louisiana, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia.

In order to sit for the exam, you must submit the application for licensure to the state. It must include verified education and work experience as required by the state. Once approved, the state will contact you with an exam bulletin.
After studying with RocketCert, you will be on your way to passing the required State exam(s) (see below). Pre-approval is not required. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities.

Which exam do I need to take?
Kentucky Electrical Contractors must pass two exams: Electrical and Business and Law.
Masters and Journeymen must pass only the electrician exam.
Exams can be scheduled through either ProV or Pearson VUE. Our exam prep and books are for the ProV exam.

How do I pass the exam?
The Kentucky Electrician exam is open book. This reference is permitted to be tabbed and highlighted! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
