What type of work can be done with this license?

Licensed Contractor in Florida
  • General Contractor

    General Contractors are unlimited in the type of work they can do.

  • Building Contractor

    Building Contractors are able to work on commercial and residential structures not exceeding 3 stories in height. This includes accessory structures such as garage, guest house, etc.

  • Residential Contractor

    Residential Contractors are able to work on one, two, and three family residences not more than two stories in height. This includes accessory structures such as garage, guest house, etc.

  • Certified vs. Registered Contractor

    Certified Contractor means a contractor who is allowed to contract in any jurisdiction in the State whereas Registered Contractor is a contractor who may only contract in the jurisdiction where they fulfilled the specific competency requirements. The information on this page is for becoming a "certified" contractor.

What are the requirements to getting a license?

CONTRACTOR CLASS B requirementsExperience

Meet one of the following:

  • 4 years construction degree and 1 year exp.
  • 1 year exp. as foreman and at least 3 years of college credits
  • 1 years exp. as worker, 1 year as foreman, & at least 2 years of college credits
  • 2 years exp. as worker, 1 year exp. as a foreman, & at least 1 year of college credits
  • 4 years exp. with at least 1 year being as a foreman
  • Military exp. substitutes for college
CONTRACTOR CLASS C RequirementsBusiness
  • General and Building: $300,000 public liability & $50,000 property damage
  • Residential: $100,000 public liability & $25,000 property damage
  • Obtain Workers' Compensation
  • If credit score is less than 660 or there are unsatisfied judgments, provide a bond or letter of credit. This can be reduced by 50% by completing a 14 hour financial responsibility course.

How do I obtain a license?

To apply for your license, contact the Florida DBPR at 850-487-1395 or visit the Contractor's Board Website.

14 hours of continuing education are required each renewal. Other than electrical, Florida does not have any reciprocity agreements.

Exam Pre-Approval

The first step is to obtain pre-approval for your exam. This can be completed through PTI by calling 407-264-0562.


Preparing to pass the State exam is a critical part of the licensing process. Failing the exam can result in substantial delays before you are able to work under your license. We offer industry leading exam prep and all of the required books, at an unbeatable price.

Next you will need to submit to background checks, form a legal entity, obtain all required insurance, and obtain a bond (if necessary).

Which exam do I need to take?

To schedule your construction exam, first obtain pre-approval with PTI by visiting or call 407-264-0562. After you have been approved, you can schedule your exams with Pearson VUE at 888-204-6230.

Division I contractors (General, Building, and Residential) must pass three examinations: Business & Finance, Contract Administration, and Project Management.
