A license is required in the state of Florida to bid on any construction project. The process and exam for general, building, and residential contractors are similar to each other. General Contractors are unlimited in the type of work they can do.
Building Contractors are able to work on commercial and residential structures not exceeding 3 stories in height. This includes accessory structures such as garage, guest house, etc.
Residential Contractors are able to work on one, two, and three family residences not more than two stories in height. This includes accessory structures such as garage, guest house, etc.
Certified Contractor means a contractor who is allowed to contract in any jurisdiction in the State whereas Registered Contractor is a contractor who may only contract in the jurisdiction where they fulfilled the specific competency requirements. To schedule your construction exam, first obtain pre-approval with PTI by visiting floridaexam.com or call 407-264-0562. After you have been approved, you can schedule your exams with Pearson VUE at 888-204-6230.
Division I contractors (General, Building, and Residential) must pass three examinations: Business & Finance, Contract Administration, and Project Management.
All license classifications are required to pass the Business and Finance exam given by Pearson VUE. Visit our Business and Finance page to learn more regarding test specifics.
The Florida Contractor License exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
The exam prep includes math and accounting, plan reading, highlighting guides covering the topics your exam is based on, practice questions for each reference, and unlimited attempts on our "test simulation".
