Residential Electrical Contractor Licensing & Exam Prep

South Carolina requires all Residential Electrical Contractors to obtain a Residential Specialty Electrical License before any bidding or residential Electrical work over $5,000 can take place. All applicants must pass the Business Management & Law exam in addition to one of the Electrician exams offered in South Carolina.

Applicants can elect to sit for either the South Carolina Electrical Contractor Exam or the NASCLA Accredited Exam, which is accepted by multiple state agencies. Both exams are offered by PSI.   • Furnish an original surety bond with the license fee after passing the examination if the total cost of construction exceeds $5,000. The bond must be the original document signed by the applicant, in the amount of $10,000, with the power of attorney attached and the individuals name listed as principal.

  • Submit 1 year of experience under a residential builder or Electrical contractor within the preceding 5 years.

How do I obtain a license?

To apply for your license, contact the South Carolina Residential Builders Commission at 803-896-4696 or visit Residential Builders Commission.

The state does not require continuing education prior to each renewal. Also, South Carolina has reciprocity agreements for this license with Alabama.
