What type of work can be done with this license?

Licensed Electrician in Michigan
  • Journeyman Electrical License

    In the state of Michigan, a Journeyman Electrician engages in the practical installation or alteration of electrical wiring. An electrical contractor or master electrician may also be an electrical journeyman.

  • Master Electrical License

    A Master may supervise the installation of electrical wiring and equipment in accordance with the standard rules and regulations governing that work.

  • Electrical Contractor License

    An Electrical Contractor licenses allows you to erect, install, alter, repair, service, or maintain electrical wiring.



Specialty Electrical Licenses
  • Fire Alarm Contractor License

    License holders may engage in the business of erecting, installing, altering, repairing, servicing, or maintaining wiring, devices, appliances, or equipment of a fire alarm system.

  • Fire Alarm Specialty Technician License

    License holders are permitted to engage in the design and practical installation or alteration of fire alarm systems.

  • Sign Specialty Contractor License

    License holders may engaged in the business of manufacturing, installing, maintaining, connecting, or repairing electric sign wiring or devices, including wiring that is directly related to electric signs and is electrically dedicated as a sign circuit.

  • Sign Specialist License

    License holders are permitted to engage in the installation, alteration, or repair of electric signs.

What are the requirements to getting a license?

Michigan Electrical Contractor RequirementsJourneyman Electrician License
  • Be at least 20 years of age
  • Obtain 8,000 hours of work experience over a minimum of at least four years (2,000 max per year)
    OR
  • Graduate from a recognized training or educational program
  • Submit a complete and notarized application with supporting documents
  • Upon application approval, applicants may schedule a time and date to sit for the Michigan Journeyman Electrical exam
Michigan Contractor RequirementsMaster Electrician License
  • Be at least 22 years of age
  • Hold a journeyman license for no less than 2 years
  • Obtain 12,000 hours of work experience obtained over a 6-year period under the supervision of a Master Electrician
  • Submit a complete and notarized application with supporting documents
  • Upon application approval, applicants may schedule a time and date to sit for the Michigan Master Electrical exam
Michigan Electrical Contractor RequirementsElectrical Contractor License
  • Holds a Master Electrician's license or has not less than 1 Master Electrician residing in this state who is in his or her full-time employ. The master electrician shall be actively in charge of and responsible for code compliance of all installations of electrical wiring and equipment
  • Submit a complete and notarized application and supporting documents
  • Upon application approval, applicants may schedule a time and date to sit for the Michigan Electrical Contractor exam

How do I obtain a license?

To apply, contact the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs at 517-335-9700 or visit the LARA website.

The state of Michigan requires 15 hours of continuing education for this license. Michigan may allow license reciprocity if the license and experience is deemed sufficient by the board. In such instances, applicants will still be required to pass the required exam. An electrician from another state can get a temporary journeyman license for 90 days if they're approved to take the journeyman exam.

Exam Pre-Approval

The first step is to obtain pre-approval for your exam. This can be obtained after a submitted application packet is approved by the board. Once approved, applicants may schedule a time and date to take the exam. Contact PSI at 855-579-4635 to schedule. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities.

How do I pass the exam?

The Michigan exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! All reference materials must be bound. The materials printed from the BCC website must be bound by 3 staples on the left edge in separate documents. Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
