License holders may engage in the business of erecting, installing, altering, repairing, servicing, or maintaining wiring, devices, appliances, or equipment of a fire alarm system.

Fire Alarm Specialty Technician License
License holders are permitted to engage in the design and practical installation or alteration of fire alarm systems.

Sign Specialty Contractor License
License holders may engaged in the business of manufacturing, installing, maintaining, connecting, or repairing electric sign wiring or devices, including wiring that is directly related to electric signs and is electrically dedicated as a sign circuit.

Sign Specialist License
License holders are permitted to engage in the installation, alteration, or repair of electric signs.
What are the requirements to getting a Michigan Fire Alarm license?
Fire Alarm Contractor License
- Holds a fire alarm specialty technician's license or has not less than 1 fire alarm specialty technician residing in this state who is in his or her full-time employ. The fire alarm specialty technician shall be actively in charge of and responsible for code compliance of all installations of fire alarm system wiring and equipment
- Out-of-state corporations will not qualify for a contractor's license unless they employ a fire alarm specialty technician residing in the state of Michigan
- Must take and pass the examination
Fire Alarm Specialty Technician License
- Be at least 20 years of age
- Be certified by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technology (NICET) as an associate engineering technician, level II, or the equivalent as determined by the board, in the field of fire alarm systems technology
- Must take and pass the examination
How do I obtain a Michigan Fire Alarm license?
To apply for your fire alarm license, contact the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs at 517-335-9700 or visit the LARA website.
The state of Michigan requires 15 hours of continuing education for this electrical license. Michigan may allow license reciprocity if the license and experience is deemed sufficient by the board. In such instances, applicants will still be required to pass the required exam. An electrician from another state can get a temporary journeyman license for 90 days if they're approved to take the journeyman exam.

Exam Pre-Approval
The first step is to obtain pre-approval for your exam. This can be obtained after a submitted application packet is approved by the board. Once approved, applicants may schedule a time and date to take the fire alarm license exam in Michigan. Contact PSI at 855-579-4635 to schedule. How do I pass the Michigan Fire Alarm license exam?
The Michigan fire alarm license exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! All reference materials must be bound. The materials printed from the BCC website must be bound by 3 staples on the left edge in separate documents. Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
