What type of work can be done with the Idaho electrical license?

Licensed Electrician in Idaho
  • Journeyman Electrician Exam

    The state qualifies a Journey Worker Electrical as any person who performs or supervises the actual physical work of installation, improvement, extension or alteration of Electrical systems under the supervision of a qualified Electrical contractor.

  • Master Electrical License

    Once licensed, the Idaho Division of Building Safety considers a Master Electrician to be any person who has personally performed the actual physical work of installing electric wiring or equipment as a journeyman electrician for at least four (4) years under the supervision of a qualified electrical contractor.

  • Electrical Contractor License

    Electrical Contractors are those who are providing or offering to provide electrical contracting services, including, but not limited to, submitting a bid. They must either be or employ at least one (1) full-time Idaho Master Electrician.

What are the requirements to getting an Idaho electrical license?

Journeyman Electrical RequirementsJourneyman Electrical Requirements

Option 1

  • Completion of four (4) years of approved electrical apprenticeship school
  • Notarized documentation of four (4) years (8,000 hours) of work experience
  • Passing score on the Idaho Electrical Exam

Option 2

  • Notarized documentation of eight (8) years (16,000 hours) of verified work experience
  • Passing score on the Idaho Electrical Exam

Option 3

  • Completion of four (4) years of approved electrical apprenticeship school
  • Notarized documentation of a minimum of 6,000 hours of work experience as an Idaho Electrical Apprentice
  • Passing score on the Idaho Electrical Exam
  • If using this method to qualify, you will need to submit your additional hours, for a total of four (4) years (a minimum of 8,000 hours) of work experience, after passing the exam in order to receive the license.

All installations performed must have been made under the constant supervision of a licensed Electrical Journeyman/Master.

In-state

  • Hold an Idaho Electrical Journeyman License for a minimum of four (4) years.
  • Obtain passing score on the Idaho Electrical Exam

Out-of-state

  • If you hold an Electrical Journeyman license in a state without Idaho Reciprocity:
  1. Qualify for and pass the Idaho Electrical Journeyman exam
  2. Once the Idaho Journeyman license is obtained, you may apply to take the Master Electrical exam.
  3. After passing, you can submit the application and proof of holding the Journeyman license in the non-reciprocal state for a minimum of (4) years.
  • If you currently hold an active Electrical Master license in Wyoming for at least 1 year:
  1. Submit a copy of his/her current Electrical Master License. This license must have been issued after passing the Electrical Master’s exam in the reciprocating state

If you are applying as an individual:

  • Be or employ an Idaho licensed Master Electrician.
  • Be the individual to be licensed.
  • Pass the Idaho Electrical Contractor Exam

If you are applying as an entity:

  • Be a full-time supervisory employee of the corporation, company, etc. serving as the entity’s representative for examination purposes.
  • Employ on a full-time basis an Idaho licensed Master Electrician, who is available during working hours to supervise all electrical work conducted.
  • Pass the Idaho Electrical Contractor Exam

How do I obtain an Idaho electrical license?

To inquire about your license or find the license application, contact the Idaho Division of Building Safety at 208-334-3950 or visit the board Website.

Idaho Electricians need 24 hours of continuing education for each renewal. Also, Idaho Journeyman have reciprocity agreements with Colorado, Maine, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming.

SUBMIT APPLICATION AND DOCUMENTS

Before you can sit for the exam you must submit a completed and notarized application and any fees required by the state. Once the application is approved the state will notify by mail or email.

PASS THE STATE EXAM
