There are many requirements in place for aspiring cosmetologists who want to work in the state of Florida. Licensees are now required to complete not only the traditional cosmetology training but also a four-hour course on HIV/AIDS education.

These requirements must be met by nail specialists, facial specialists, and full specialists as well as cosmetologists.

In order to obtain your cosmetology license, you’ll need to complete a training program that has been approved by the state. Not just any program or course will do.

Requirements for Florida Cosmetology Licenses

In the state of Florida, cosmetology licenses expire every two years on the last day of October. There are two groups of licenses — Group 1 licenses expire on the odd years and Group 2 licenses expire on the even years.

Required Educational Hours

The education requirements for a cosmetology license in Florida are as follows:

  • Nail specialists must complete 180 hours of a nail program in Florida
  • Facial specialists must complete 220 hours on a facial program in Florida
  • Full specialists need to complete 400 hours in the relevant program in Florida

Professionals wishing to obtain a cosmetology license must complete 1,200 hours in a Florida-approved cosmetology program. This is in addition to successfully passing a two-part cosmetology exam that covers theoretical and clinical applications of the industry. Both portions have to be passed within a two-year timeframe.

In addition to this traditional education, all professionals must take the four-hour course on HIV/AIDS.

Additional Requirements

In order to enroll in a state-approved cosmetology school, you must be at least 16 years old or have already received your high school diploma.

Once you have completed the 1,200 required hours of cosmetology education, you can visit the Florida DBPR website to begin the licensure process by submitting an application along with the applicable fees.

Once this is done, you’ll receive information from a company called Pearson VUE, the vendor of the Florida cosmetology licensure exam. Once you have this information, you will be able to schedule a time to take your test.

The four-hour HIV/AIDS training course must be taken no earlier than two years prior to submitting your cosmetology license application.

When you turn in your final application for licensure, you’ll need to submit proof of completion of a cosmetology school program, proof that you passed both parts of the exam, and proof of your completion of the HIV/AIDS course.
