Being a barber is a rewarding career for many people, and it continues to be just as much in demand as ever!
If you’re considering becoming a barber in Florida, your first step is to go through a barbering program.
This requirement is in place not only to ensure that your future customers are always happy with your services but also to keep you and them safe. In addition to completing the program, you’ll take an exam and go through a two-hour HIV/AIDS course.
Specifically, in order to become a barber in the state of Florida, aspiring professionals must complete a 600-hour training course at a state-approved school. In addition, they need to be deemed competent by a school representative in order to sit for the state barber test, which is also part of the requirements.
According to the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation, in lieu of taking the exam, professionals may instead complete 900 hours of training at an approved school.
The Florida barber license itself is administered by the Florida Barbers’ Board, and you must be at least 16 years old in order to apply for licensure by examination.
If you do not take the exam and do not complete the extra 300 hours of education required by the state, you can still qualify for a restricted barbering license.
The Florida exam for barbers consists of 100 multiple-choice questions, and you will have three hours to complete the test. There are seven content areas covered in the test:
The examination for restricted barbers has 30 questions that cover laws and rules of the state, and test takers have one hour to complete the test. Once you receive your license, you will need to renew it before November 30th of every even-numbered year.
You must complete a board-approved initial HIV/AIDS course and provide proof of completion when you submit your license application. Make sure you complete the course no earlier than two years prior to the date that you will submit your application.
It’s important to note that even though there is a four-hour HIV/AIDS course for cosmetology, it cannot substitute for the two-hour course for barbers.
If you will be submitting your license application online, you can pay the associated fees using an electronic check or credit card. If you are applying by mail, you’ll need to include a check.
