Electrical contractors in Arizona are responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical systems of all kinds in many different applications. These professionals are employed in a variety of settings, including businesses, homes, industrial facilities, and others.

Requirements for Obtaining Your Electrical Contractor License in AZ

If you’re interested in becoming an electrical contractor in Arizona, you must be aware of the requirements for licensure. These requirements are set by the Arizona Registrar of Contractors (ROC) and include the following:

  • You must be at least 18 years old
  • You must be a permanent resident or U.S. citizen
  • You must submit and pass a background check
  • Your background check must be clear of felony convictions
  • You must have at least a high school diploma or equivalent

In addition, you will be required to pass two exams: a written one and a practical one. The written exam will cover electrical theory, safety, and wiring topics. The practical exam will allow you to demonstrate your skills in working with electrical systems.

Requirements also include meeting various bond limits. You will be required to obtain a surety bond according to the anticipated gross volume of work you will do. You must have:

  • A $2.5k bond for work that adds up to less than $150k
  • A $7k bond for work ranging from $150k to $500k
  • A $17.5k bond for work of $500k to $1 million
  • A $25k bond for work between $1 million and $5 million
  • A $37.5k bond for work of $5 million to $10 million

A $50,000 bond is required for anything over $10 million. In addition to meeting these bond limit requirements, you must form a legal entity that is recognized by the state and submit proof of four years of hands-on or managerial experience.

Testing Requirements for Electrical Contractor Licensure in AZ

Testing represents a large portion of the qualifications for licensure. You will need to take either the NASCLA Accredited Electrical Exam or the C-11/CR-11 Electrical Examination. In addition to one of the two, you must also take the AZ Statutes and Rules Training Course and Exam (SRE).

The SRE is computer-based and available online only through the Registrar of Contractors (ROC). It involves a training course about applicable statutes and rules. It also includes an accompanying exam you must pass.

The NASCLA Electrical Exam is an open-book exam with 100 questions; you must answer 75 correctly to pass. Topics covered include electrical theory and principles, code requirements, communications systems, and more.

The C-11/CR-11 Electrical Examination has 110 questions, and it, too, is open-book. You must answer 77 questions correctly to pass. Topics include fire detection and alarms, conductors and cables, general electrical knowledge, and many others.
