If you’re working toward earning your Arizona air conditioning/refrigeration license, you should know that you must meet several requirements to qualify for licensure. These licenses are broken up into three different categories:
Applicants had previously been required to pass the Statutes and Rules Exam as part of the qualifications for licensure. However, that requirement has recently been replaced. Now, applicants must participate in the AZ Statutes and Rules Training Course (SRE) and pass the accompanying exam.
The scope of work that can be performed with each of the license variations varies, as do the requirements for being eligible for licensure. These licenses now also include solar work.
The residential license allows contractors to repair and install air conditioning systems, including refrigeration, with or without solar equipment. They can install and repair refrigerator rooms, insulated spaces, controls, and machinery.
The commercial certification allows license holders to install, repair, and maintain evaporative cooling systems and refrigeration systems, wet and dry or radiant heating systems, and other commercial systems.
The dual certification simply allows the licensee to engage in both types of work outlined for the residential and commercial certifications.
In addition to passing two tests, you will be required to submit proof that you have at least four years of hands-on or managerial experience in the field.
Finally, you must submit a background check for every person named on the contractor license application and form a legal entity that is recognized by the state. There are several different bond requirements you’ll need to meet as well.
A residential contractor must get a $4,250 surety bond if the gross work volume is expected to be below $375k. For anything greater than that, a $7,500 surety bond is required.
Commercial contractors must obtain surety bonds according to the following anticipated gross volume amounts:
A $50k bond is necessary for anticipated gross volumes that are over $10 million. Dual air conditioning and refrigeration contractors must meet the bond requirements for both residential and commercial certifications.
You must pass the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Including Solar Exam in order to obtain your AZ license. There are 30 questions on the open-book exam, and you will have 75 minutes to finish. Topics include installation, solar systems piping, collection loops, and mounting.
