In the state of Arizona, all companies that contract or offer to contract for business must employ a licensed contractor. In order to become a licensed dual residential/small commercial contractor in Arizona, you must meet several qualifications and requirements.

The General Residential classification allows a professional to construct and repair any structures, but work relating to pools, spas, boilers, plumbing, electrical, and air conditioning must be subcontracted.

The General Small Commercial classification allows licensees to perform commercial construction and supervision of projects that are $2 million or less in scope, including labor and materials. This includes direct or indirect supervision of work performed.

The Dual Residential and Small Contractor license combines the allowable scope of work that comes with the General Residential license and the General Small Commercial license.

Requirements for Obtaining an Arizona Dual Residential/Small Commercial Contractor License

The requirements you must meet to qualify for this type of license involve several aspects, including your education, experience, and financial protection. When applying to the Arizona Registrar of Contractors for licensure, you must identify a qualifying party with at least four years of experience.

You must also form a legal entity with the Arizona Corporation Commission and submit proof that you hold a license surety bond of an amount appropriate to what you project your yearly earnings will be.

In addition, you must submit a background check for each person who is listed on your License Application Form. The application fee amount will vary depending on various factors; this must also be paid at the time you submit your application for this license.

Finally, you must pass the B/B-2 state licensure exam, which is one of the most important parts of qualifying for the Dual Residential and Small Contractor license. You must also take and pass the AZ Statutes and Rules Training Course and Exam (SRE).

Taking and Passing the AZ Statutes and Rules Training Course and Exam (SRE) and the B/B-2 Exam

The B/B-2 Exam has 100 questions; you must answer at least 70 of them correctly to pass. You will have 240 minutes to pass the exam. Some of the topics you will be tested on include:

  • Thermal and moisture protection
  • Finishes
  • Plan reading and estimating
  • Concrete
  • Metal framing
  • Sitework
  • Safety
  • Doors and windows
  • Masonry

While the test is not open-book, some titles are allowed to be used as references during the exam.

The AZ Statutes and Rules Training Course and Exam are available online only, unlike the B/B-2 exam and other trade exams. The content includes analyses of applicable Arizona statutes and rules. This course and exam are offered only through the Arizona Registrar of Contractors (ROC).
