The general contractor licenses in Arizona are divided into three categories: residential, commercial, and dual certifications. The bearer of the residential general contractor (B) license can engage in work to alter, repair, or construct structures to support and shelter people.

The professional with a commercial general contractor (B-1) license in Arizona can engage in similar work for commercial and movable properties of any kind. These professionals can also supervise this kind of work and manage projects directly or indirectly.

If a professional has a dual building contractor (KB-1) license, they are legally permitted to perform, supervise, and manage the scope of work permitted by both of the previously mentioned licenses.

Financial Requirements for AZ GC Licenses

You will be required to provide proof that you have the necessary bonds appropriate for your license type. The residential general contractor must obtain a $7,000 surety bond for work that is less than $750,000 gross volume. They must obtain a surety bond of $15,000 for anything over $750,000.

The commercial general contractor is required to obtain a surety bond that also varies depending on their anticipated gross volume of work:

  • A $5k bond for less than $150k gross volume
  • A $15k bond for work between $150k and $500k
  • A $25 bond for work between $500k and $1 million
  • A $50k bond for work between $1 million and $5 million
  • A $75k bond for work between $5 million and $10 million

Any gross volume that is projected to be above $10 million must be covered by a surety bond of $100,000. The bond requirements for professionals who hold a dual contractor license are the bond requirements for residential and commercial contractors combined.

Testing Requirements for an AZ General Contractor License

Previously, applicants were required to pass the Statutes and Rules Exam for licensure. However, that’s now been replaced by the Arizona Statutes and Rules Training Course and Exam (SRE).

Experience and Exam Requirements

You must submit proof that you have at least four years of hands-on or managerial experience in the construction industry.

Applicants can choose which exam they prefer to take: the AZ ROC General Exam or the NASCLA Accredited Examination for Commercial General Building Contractors. In addition, applicants for licensure must complete the AZ Statutes and Rules Training Course and Exam.

The AZ Statutes and Rules Training Course and Exam are taken after computer-based training is complete. This training goes over applicable Arizona statutes and rules regarding the industry. While the trade exams are available in various formats, this training course and exam are available online only through the Registrar of Contractors (ROC).

The General Commercial/Dual Building Contractor Exam has 100 questions, and you must answer at least 70 of them correctly to receive a passing grade. You will have 240 minutes to complete this open-book exam.
