You’ll need to work under a licensed electrician first, then earn your license as a residential electrician. After that, if you choose, you can go on to earn your contractor license to work as an independent contractor. 

Becoming an electrician in Alaska requires time, dedication, work, and effort; education and experiential hours are required for licensing.

Alaska Residential Electrical License Requirements

The first license you can apply for is the journeyman or residential certificate. The certificate doesn’t require as many work hours as the journeyman license, but certificate holders cannot do as much work as journeyman license holders. 

Licensing is administered by the state’s Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development, so you will need to apply for your license through that office's website. You’ll be required to provide proof of your education, pass the state-administered professional exam, and provide proof of your experience. 

Once you have your license, you will need to renew it every two years after completing a specific number of hours of continuing education courses. You’ll also need the following to apply:

• A high school diploma or equivalent/high school transcripts
• A valid driver’s license
• An official resume
• An application fee of $50.00
• A Social Security card or valid eligibility document from Immigration and Customs Enforcement

In addition, if you’re a veteran, you should include a copy of your DD214.

Residential Electrical Licensing Requirements in Alaska

When you send in your application and it’s approved, you will receive a Certificate of Fitness. For the Electrical Residential Certificate of Fitness, you will be required to have a minimum of 4,000 hours of experience in the industry, and you must provide verification of your work experience. 

In addition to the experience requirement, you will need to submit a completed application that has been notarized. Finally, you must also pass the Residential Electrician Exam.

Preparing for the Alaska Residential Electrical License Exam

You will need to contact the Alaska Mechanical Inspection Department to schedule your exam. When you take it, you will have four hours from start to finish, and it is an open-book exam. In order to pass, you must score at least 70%. The test covers topics that include grounding, safety, circuits, and conductors, along with many others.
