Gas fitters install, upkeep, repair, and maintain gas-fueled equipment and appliances. They work in a wide variety of settings, from industrial facilities to homes.
If you’re interested in becoming a gas fitter in Alabama, you’ll need to obtain your professional gas fitter license. You must meet several requirements and pass two state exams to do that.
You can receive two types of gas fitter licenses in Alabama: the journeyman license and the master gas fitter license.
The journeyman gas fitter engages in or works on installing and repairing gas appliances.
A master gas fitter engages in contracting work that involves installing, repairing, or maintaining gas systems and appliances. The requirements you must meet will depend on which license you are working toward.
For this license, you must pass the journeyman gas fitter exam, for which you need pre-approval. You will also need to complete a two-year program from an approved trade school, community college, or technical school.
Alternatively, you must have 240 hours of educational or vocational training and four years of verifiable experience in the trade. Another option is having 160 hours of educational or vocational training and five years of verifiable experience in the gas fitter industry.
There are still three other options. The first is 80 hours of educational or vocational training and six years of verifiable experience in the trade. The second is a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited university or college and one year of experience. The final option is ten years of verifiable experience in the gas fitter trade.
You must pass the master gas fitter exam, for which you need pre-approval. You must also provide proof that you have one year of experience as a licensed journeyman gas fitter or ten years of experience in the industry.
Two different tests are available: one for the journeyman license and the other for the master gas fitter license.
The journeyman gas fitter license exam has 50 questions, and you must answer at least 35 of them correctly to pass. You’re given two hours to complete the exam, which is an open-book test.
