When it comes to obtaining an electrical license in Minnesota, the primary requirements center on work experience, which varies by classification. With that being said, certain types of education, such as a related 2-year vocational program or a bachelor’s degree, may count toward a portion of experience requirements.

Class A Master Electrician

Before you can take the exam to become a Class A master electrician, you must complete 60 months of work experience. This will include a range of tasks, such as a minimum of two months each (maximum 12 months) of planning, laying out, and supervising installations for wiring and equipment that controls light, heat, or power.

You also need a minimum of 12 months (maximum 48 months) installing or repairing electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment. 

Other experience could include maintaining and repairing electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment; line work; installing elevators; wiring and maintaining technology circuits or systems; and wiring and maintaining circuits or systems for process control circuits, although these are not required.

Class A Journeyworker Electrician

Prior to taking the Class A journeyworker electrician exam, you must complete 48 months of work experience. This will include a minimum of 12 months (maximum 48) wiring and installing electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment. 

It could also include any combination of the experience required for a Class A master electrician, totaling up to 36 months.
