All roofing companies in Minnesota must have a license in order to work on residences and provide roof coverings, sheathing, weatherproofing, insulation, and repairs for roofs. This license must be held by a “qualifying person,” whether they operate a sole proprietorship or participate in a partnership or corporation.

If you already have a roofing license, you are responsible for completing an exam and fulfilling continuing education requirements for license renewal every two years. If you are applying for a license, you need to fulfill several requirements. Here’s what you need to know to get the licensing process underway.

Submitting Your Application

When applying for a roofer license, you’ll have to not only pass an exam but also submit several forms. First and foremost, you’ll have to complete the residential roofers license application and consent to a background check by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

You’ll also have to submit business organization documents, such as a signed partnership agreement or copy of your company’s Articles of Incorporation, filed and stamped by the Minnesota Secretary of State.

Next, you’ll need a completed Disclosure of Owners, Partners, Officers form, as well as background check forms for each person listed therein. Additionally, you’ll have to submit a signed and notarized surety bond in the amount of $15,000 as well as all required certificates of insurance (liability, workers’ compensation, and unemployment).

Once you have assembled all required documents, you can submit them online, by mail, or in person to the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry, along with a licensing fee of $120. As the designated qualifying person, you will also have to pass the exam to apply for a roofer license.

The Exam Process

The residential roofer exam contains 110 questions; you’ll need to answer 70% or more correctly to pass. Although there are no education or experience requirements to take the exam, it’s wise to complete a test prep program beforehand to ensure that you have the knowledge needed to pass the first time.

Test prep should cover information pertaining to:

  • General roofing principles
  • Estimates
  • Roof deck requirements
  • Underlayment
  • Pitched roofs
  • Low-sloped roofs
  • Roofing fasteners
  • Flashing
  • Ventilation
  • Reroofing

All of these topics may come up during testing, so you want to be prepared to answer questions about them. A comprehensive test prep program will cover critical information as well as teach you how to solve common calculations, provide practice quizzes and timed exam simulations, and offer test-taking tips to help you ace your exam.

Choosing the Right Test Prep Program

The best test prep program will be approved by the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry and deliver the materials and educational support you need.

You should also look for programs designed by experts that offer the convenience of on-demand availability on your preferred device. Look for lifetime access to course materials and a “no pass, no pay” guarantee for your peace of mind.
