What type of work can be done with this license?

  • Class A Journeyworker Electrical License

    A licensed Class A Journeyworker Electrician is licensed to perform and supervise any electrical work except for planning or laying out of electrical work.

  • Class B Journeyworker Electrical License

    A licensed Class B Journeyworker Electrician may install, alter, repair, and supervise the installing, altering, or repairing of electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment for single phase systems of not more than 200 ampere capacity for light, heat, power, and other purposes on any farm or in any single family dwelling located in any town or municipality which has a population of less than 2,500 inhabitants.

  • Class A Master Electrical License

    A Master Electrician in Minnesota is able to perform and supervise any electrical work.

  • Class B Master Electrical License

    A Master Electrician in Minnesota can engage in the planning, superintending and the practical installation of Electrical, to contract for Electrical and installations and to conduct the business of Electrical. The individual may perform Electrical statewide, for both interior Electrical and exterior water service, sanitary sewer and storm sewer systems within the property lines.

  • Electrical Contractor License

    A Electrical Contractor is someone who performs or offers to perform any electrical work, with or without compensation. A contractor's license does not of itself qualify its holder to perform or supervise the electrical work authorized by holding any class of electrician's or other personal license.

What are the requirements to getting a license?

  • Submit completed, signed, and notarized application with appropriate fees
  • Schedule exam after approval letter is received

  • Obtain at least 48 months of experience comprised of:
    • At least 24 months, up to 48 months of wiring for and installing electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment
    • Up to 24 months of maintaining and repairing electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment
    • Up to 3 months of line work
    • Up to 6 months of installing elevators or wiring and maintaining technology circuits or systems
    • Up to 12 months of wiring and maintaining process control circuits or systems
    • A maximum of one year of experience credit will be allowed for the successful completion of a two-year, post high school electrical course approved by the board.
Minnesota Electrical RequirementsMaster Electrician
  • Submit completed, signed, and notarized application with appropriate fees
  • Schedule exam after approval letter is received

  • Obtain at least 60 months of experience comprised of:
    • At least 2 months of the following, with maximum credit of 12 months each:
      • planning for the installation of wiring, apparatus, and equipment for light, heat, and power
      • laying out for the installation of wiring, apparatus, and equipment for light, heat, and power
      • supervising the installation of wiring, apparatus, and equipment for light, heat, and power
    • At least 12 months, up to 48 months of wiring for and installing electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment
    • Up to 24 months of maintaining and repairing electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment
    • Up to 3 months of line work
    • Up to 6 months of installing elevators or wiring and maintaining technology circuits or systems
    • Up to 12 months of wiring and maintaining process control circuits or systems

  • Provide Certificate of Responsible Licensed Individual (Master Electrician or Restricted Master Electrician)

How do I obtain a license?

To apply for your license, contact the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry at 651-284-5012 or visit DLI website.

The state requires 16 hours of continuing education prior to each renewal. Minnesota has agreements at the journeyworker electrician level with the following states: Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. In addition, Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, Nebraska, and South Dakota have reciprocal agreements at the master electrician license level.

PASS THE STATE EXAM

The Board will notify the applicant once they have been approved to take the examination. The applicant will apply to sit for the exam on the state board website. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities. Pre-approval is required from the state prior to scheduling the exam.

How do I pass the exam?

The Minnesota exams are open book, and based on the 2020 NEC. Our Bundle will include a copy of the NEC 2020 for studying, but the testing agency will provide a copy of the code book to be used during the actual exam. The tabs included in the bundle should be used with your copy of the code book in order to become familiar with the location of the content in the book. Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
