What Are the Requirements for Getting a Plumbing and Natural Gas License in Oklahoma?

If you’re interested in obtaining a professional license for plumbing and natural gas work in Oklahoma, you must meet several requirements set by the state. These include legal and financial obligations as well as education and experience requirements. 

In addition, the state requires that all applicants take and pass two exams: the Oklahoma Business and Law Exam and the Plumbing and Natural Gas Contractor Exam.

Education Requirements for OK Plumbing and Natural Gas Licenses

For journeyman contractors, you must provide proof of at least three years of verifiable experience in the trade. This experience must have been obtained while a licensed contractor employed you.

If you served in the military and have three years of verifiable experience in the plumbing and natural gas trade, that will also meet the state’s requirement for education.

Contractors must prove they have at least four years of verifiable experience. If you have an equivalent license from another state, it must be current, verifiable, and in good standing.

Professionals with an associate degree from a program consisting of at least 1,000 hours can use their degree as a substitute for two years of experience. In addition, a career tech diploma from a plumbing and natural gas program consisting of at least 500 hours can suffice for one year of experience.

Financial and Legal Requirements for Licensure in Oklahoma

Applicants for this type of license in Oklahoma are required to provide proof that they have obtained at least a $5,000 surety bond. 

They must also provide a certificate of insurance showing coverage of at least a minimum of $50,000 in general liability insurance. 

Finally, applicants for the license must carry workers’ compensation insurance and provide proof of such coverage when they submit their application for the license.

Exam Requirements for Oklahoma Licensure

You must pass two exams to receive a plumbing and natural gas contractor license in Oklahoma: the Plumbing and Natural Gas Contractor exam and the Business and Law Exam.

Topics included in the business exam are:

For the business exam, you will have 120 minutes to complete your exam, which is an open-book test.

You must get at least 75% of the questions correct on each exam in order to pass. The contractor exam contains 85 questions, and the business exam contains 50 questions. You will have 180 minutes to finish the contractor exam, which is open book.
