Anyone who works on natural gas systems for compensation in the state of Oklahoma must be licensed by the state. Earning your natural gas license is required prior to any bidding, contracting, or performing work being done.
Natural gas contractors are permitted to alter, install, modify, repair, or maintain natural gas piping systems. Journeyman license holders must conduct work under a contractor’s direct supervision.
To obtain that license, you must meet several requirements from the state’s Construction Industries Board (CIB).
Those seeking licensure through the state must meet legal, financial, and educational requirements. In addition, a specific amount of experience in the field is required, and applicants must also successfully pass two examinations prior to licensure.
The state requires that you submit certificates of coverage with your licensure application for those who are applying for a full contractor license (as opposed to a journeyman license).
You must show that you have at least a $5,000 surety bond and $50,000 general liability insurance. The documents must be submitted when you submit your application and application fee.
If you earned an associate’s degree by successfully completing a natural gas education program that consisted of at least 1,000 hours, your degree could take the place of two years of experience.
Likewise, if you have a career tech diploma from a program consisting of 500 hours of instruction time, the diploma can serve as a substitute for one year of experience.
Applicants must also meet at least one of the following four criteria:
Once you have this experience under your belt and your legal and financial obligations are met, you must get approval from the state to schedule your exams.
There is a separate exam for the journeyman and contractor licenses; however, both types of professionals will take the same mechanical and business law test.
The journeyman exam has 30 questions; you must correctly answer at least 21 to pass. You are given 90 minutes to complete the exam, which is open-book.
The contractor exam has 40 questions; you must answer 28 correctly to pass. You will have 120 minutes to complete it, and the exam is open-book. Both of the natural gas examinations cover topics that include safety, pipe installation, pipe sizing, and general fuel gas piping.
The mechanical business and law exam has 50 questions, 35 of which must be answered correctly to pass. You will have two hours to complete the open-book exam. Topics include bidding and estimating, licensing, management, and contracts.
