• Process cooling or heating systems

The certified refrigeration contractor can conduct business related to refrigeration servicing and contracting. This includes the installation and repair of systems and components that use refrigeration. 

Refrigeration professionals who earn their Alabama refrigeration license can repair, install, maintain, and replace all refrigeration equipment and products, including residential freezers, refrigerators, and commercial units.

What Are the Requirements for Getting an Alabama HVAC/R License?

There are three categories of requirements you must meet to be granted this type of license: educational/experience requirements, legal requirements, and testing requirements.

The educational/experience requirements include the following:

• You must hold an apprentice registration that was issued by the state board for at least two calendar years
• Alternatively, you must complete 3,000 hours of experience or coursework as defined by the state board
• Or, you must have graduated from a state board-approved heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration course

Legal requirements demand that you submit a complete, signed, and notarized application form and your application fee to the state board. Include all required supplemental documentation with your application.

Finally, you will be required to pass either the Alabama refrigeration contractor exam or the HVAC exam, depending on which type of license specification you are working to obtain.

Alabama HVAC/Refrigeration License Exams

The refrigeration exam has 90 questions; you must answer a minimum of 63 questions (70%) correctly to pass. You will have four hours to complete the exam, and it is open-book. The exam covers topics such as:
