Electricians in Georgia who hold an electrical license must renew it every two years before its expiration date.

The Georgia state board requires professional electricians to complete a total of eight hours of continuing education (CE) courses to be eligible for renewal, and contractors are required to complete four hours per year.

Professionals who are newly licensed and have held their license for less than one year aren’t required to complete the courses until they’ve held a license for at least one year.

If you’ve held your license between one and two years, you only need to complete four hours of CE. Electrical professionals who have held their license for two or more years must take the full eight hours of CE.

What Are the Requirements for Renewing a GA Electrical License?

The eight hours of continuing education are split into two categories: four hours of education in Georgia electrical code changes and four hours of instruction in Georgia electrical business. The easiest and most convenient way to take these courses is online through a Georgia-approved provider like RocketCert.

The four hours of code changes cover both the 2014 and 2017 electrical codes. The four hours of business and management instruction cover the following:

  • OSHA and safety
  • Insurance
  • Finance
  • Business law
  • Installation methods
  • Materials

These hours must be completed before electrical licenses expire on June 30 of even-numbered years. There’s a mandatory, non-refundable application fee of $75 (late license renewal fees are $100).

The Georgia State Construction Industry Licensing Board requires all contractors to create an account on the Georgia Online Licensing website.

To begin the renewal process, you must log into your account and click the “License Renewal” button on the main dashboard. You’ll then re-enter your login information. After that, simply follow the instructions for the online renewal of the GA electrical contractor license.

What if My Electrical Contractor License Expired?

If you’ve previously held this type of GA license and it’s been expired for less than three years, you’ll need to submit a reinstatement application and a fee. The fee is $150 and is non-refundable.

You’ll also be required to submit the following documents:

  • Certificate of Completion for continuing education courses
  • Background check from a local law enforcement agency
  • A completed, signed, and notarized application
  • The application fee
  • Affidavit of Citizenship
  • Immigration papers (if applicable)
  • Any records of disciplinary actions or sanctions (if applicable)

If your electrical contractor license in Georgia has lapsed and expired more than three years ago, you must submit a reinstatement application, pay a non-refundable reinstatement fee of $150, and re-take the Georgia electrical contractor exam.

Note that you must submit the application, all required documents, and fees to receive approval to take the exam.
