The electrical administrator license is a credential that is required in the state of Alaska for at least one employee of a contractor who performs work covered by the National Electric Code or the National Electric Safety Code. This license is a supervisory license only! It does not legally permit the license holder to actually perform work that is covered by the NESC or the NEC.

Regardless of which type of electrical administrator license in Alaska you hold, it will expire every two years. However, the exact dates on which different contractor licenses expire differ. For example, contractor licenses that are journeyman electrical licenses are set to expire every two years on the anniversary of the date that they were originally issued. However, electrical administrator licenses expire on December 31st of every odd year.

Electrical professionals are required to take part in a certain number of continuing education hours with every license renewal. This requirement is for either 8 hours or 16, depending on the specific type of license the applicant is pursuing.

While a journeyman electrician may need either 8 or 16 hours, depending on a few different variables, the Electrical administrator only needs 8 hours that focus on changes in the National Electric Code and/or the National Electric Safety Code. The Alaska Division of Corporations, Business, and Professional Licensing is responsible for setting requirements for licensure.

Important Changes to Regulations of Electrical Administrators

In March of 2022, changes to the Alaska Administrative Code were adopted and will go into effect on May 14, 2022. These changes have been signed and filed by the state’s Lieutenant Governor after being reviewed and approved by the Department of Law.

The regulations being changed concern the experience, education, and examination requirements for electrical administrators. They were designed to streamline specific reporting requirements and get rid of obsolete text.

The new changes to the regulations will be printed in Register 242 of the Alaska Administrative Code in July 2022.
