A CR-42 roofing license opens up opportunities in both commercial and residential roofing. If you’re looking to expand your roofing skills and advance your business or personal career, this is the license for you.

You must meet certain work experience, documentation, and exam score requirements to qualify for this license. Learn more about how to get your CR-42 license in Arizona.

What Can You Do With a CR-42 License?

In Arizona, commercial/residential roofing contractors have dual certification. This means they’re licensed to work on both types of roofing projects based on their work experience and demonstration of relevant skills and knowledge.

With a CR-42 license in Arizona, you can:

  • Install roofing (tile, shakes, slate, etc.)
  • Repair roofing materials
  • Insulate and coat roofs
  • Install or apply weatherproofing materials to roofs
  • Use roof accessories for installation, repairs, and insulation
  • Work on or above roof decks

This broad scope of roofing work spells good news for business owners and the contractors who work under them.

Steps to Follow for CR-42 Licensure

Follow these steps to become a licensed roofer in Arizona.

Pass the CR-42 Roofing Exam

Once you have sufficient work experience and knowledge, you can take the CR-42 Roofing Exam. The test covers topics like waterproofing, estimates, plans, and roofing components. You’ll also be tested on safety information.

You must get a score of 70% or above to pass this exam.

Take the AZ Statutes and Rules Training Course and Exam (SRE)

The Arizona Statutes and Rules Training Course and Exam has replaced the previous Statutes and Rules Exam. You’ll take this course and exam online through the Arizona Registrar of Contractors.

Provide Proof of a Surety Bond

You’ll need a surety bond according to the anticipated volume of your work:

  • Volume Under $150,000: $2,500 bond
  • $150,000 to $500,000: $7,000 bond
  • $500,000 to $1 million: $17,500 bond
  • $1 million to $5 million: $25,000 bond
  • $5 million to $10 million: $37,500 bond
  • Over $10 million: $50,000 bond

The state will require proof of these bonds to protect the interests of your clients.

Provide Proof of Four or More Years of Experience

You’ll need to demonstrate that you have worked in the industry in a hands-on or managerial role for at least four years. You can submit information about past projects and client testimonials to support your application.

Submit a Background Check

Every person who is named on a license application must undergo a background check to become licensed.

Form a Legal Entity

You must be operating as a legal entity to obtain licensure.

Apply for Licensure

You must submit all of this information to the Arizona Registrar of Contractors and wait for your application to be approved. If approved, you’ll officially be licensed and searchable on the registrar’s website, which can improve trust between you and your clients.
