• Three reference letters, including one from a bank or financial institution 
• A list of all projects you’ve undertaken in the last three years, including incomplete projects

• Proof of workers’ compensation insurance coverage (for applicants with at least five employees) 
• Proof of good standing with the Secretary of State (for business owners applying as an LLC, LLP, or corporation)

About the Exams 

You’ll take two exams to get your license: the Mississippi Law and Business Management Exam and the Residential Builder Exam.

The Law and Business Exam spans two hours and is open-book — you can reference your study materials during the test. You must get 35 out of 50 exam questions correct to pass.

The Residential Builder Exam is slightly longer, spanning three hours and containing 80 questions. This test is also open-book and covers relevant topics like masonry, carpentry, drywall, and OSHA safety requirements. You must get 56 out of 80 questions correct to pass.

Getting Your Mississippi Residential Builder License  

Once you’ve passed both exams, the Mississippi State Board of Contractors must approve your license. The board will notify you once your license is active, allowing you to start work on bigger residential construction jobs.
