Arizona Roofing Contractor Licenses are split into a Residential, Commercial, and Dual certifications. The state previously required applicants to pass a Statutes and Rules exam, and that has been replaced by the AZ Statutes and Rules Training Course and Exam (SRE) provided by the Registrar of Contractors. What type of work can be done with this license?

CR-42 Commercial/Residential Roofing Contractor
This classification allows the licensee to apply or install weatherproofing (i.e. asphaltum, pitch, tar, felt, glass fabric, or flax) or roof accessories (i.e. flashing, valleys, gravel stops, or sheet metal) as required for the licensee to install or repair roof tile, shingles, shakes, slate, metal roofing systems, urethane foam, and roof insulation or coatings on or above the roof deck.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Exam & Experience- Pass PSI CR-42 Roofing Exam
- Complete the AZ Statutes and Rules Training Course and Exam (SRE) provided by the board
- Submit 4 years hands on and/or managerial experience
- Submit Background Check for every person named on the License Application Form
- Form a legal entity
Bond Limits- Obtain a surety bond according to anticipated gross volume:
- $2,500 bond for less than $150,000
- $7,000 bond for work ranging $150,000 to $500,000
- $17,500 bond for work in excess of $500,000 to $1 million
- $25,000 bond for work in excess of $1 million to $5 million
- $37,500 bond for work in excess of $5 million to $10 million
- A $50,000 bond is required for anything over $10 million
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Arizona Registrar of Contractors at 803-896-4686 or visit their website.
The state does not require continuing education prior to each renewal. Also, Arizona has reciprocity agreements with California, Nevada, and Utah.

Arizona Contractors must pass two examinations: their Trade and Statutes and Rules exam.

CR-42 Roofing Contractor Examination

- Passing Score: 70% correct
- Time: 120 minutes

Topics include: Estimating and Plan Reading; Surface Preparation and Planning; Steep and Low Slope Roofing, including BUR and Waterproofing; Roofing Components; Safety; Repairs and Reroofing
Applicants will take computer-based training about applicable Arizona statutes and rules and then be tested on what they learned throughout the training. Unlike the trade exams, this training course and exam is only available online and only offered through the ROC.
How do I pass the exam?
