The demand for talented professionals in skilled trades continues to increase, particularly in construction. With high demand for new housing and many homeowners looking to upgrade their current residences, now is a great time to consider becoming a contractor.

To legally operate as a contractor in Tennessee, you must first obtain a suitable license, and different licenses have different requirements. One option is the Tennessee BC-A/r license. How do you get this license for limited residential contractors, and what jobs can you perform once you have it?

The Job of a Limited Residential Contractor

Contractors are typically involved in projects that involve the construction, remodeling, repair, or improvement of residential, commercial, or industrial structures. As a contractor, the type of projects you can work on depends on the type of license you hold.

With a BC-A/r license, you may bid for and work on residential contracting projects worth up to $125,000, including all materials and labor. You are further limited to jobs involving single-family dwellings.

If you’re interested in tackling larger projects for multifamily structures containing up to four residences, you’ll need to obtain a residential contractor (BC-A) license. This license has additional requirements, including passing both the Tennessee Business and Law Exam and the state Residential Contractor Exam.

How to Obtain a BC-A/r License in Tennessee

Unlike the BC-A and other state contracting licenses, the Tennessee BC-A/r license does not require you to pass a state exam.

However, you will have to meet other requirements. The most important is enrolling in a state-approved course. After completing this course, you should have the necessary knowledge and skills required for licensure.

Where can you find approved courses? In partnership with RocketCert, Volunteer State Community College offers an approved training course that will prepare you to become a limited residential contractor.

When you complete this course, you will receive a certificate, which you can then submit to the Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors, along with your application for licensure and a licensing fee.

You will also be required to submit a financial statement from a licensed CPA and proof of insurance for your business (liability and workers’ compensation). Make sure that the names on all of your documents match before submitting. To maintain your license, you must complete eight hours of continuing education every two years.
