Type-S Electrician Licensing & Exam Prep

This page outlines the requirements and abilities of (C3) Refrigeration and Air Conditioning and (A1) Automatic Gas / Oil Heating Specialty Electricians. Electrician license applicants are required to pass theoretical and practical exams. Once the license is obtained, licensees must complete 15 hours of continuing education prior to each license renewal.

  • Type-S Journeyman: (C3) Refrigeration & Air Conditioning

    A Type-S Journeyman Electrician for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Electrical is entitled to perform specialty electrical installations after completing an accredited training and experience program recognized by the board; or having acceptable training and experience. The licensed person must pass a separate exam in the specialty selected, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Electrical.

  • Type-S Journeyman: (A1) Automatic Gas / Oil Heating

    A Type-S Journeyman Electrician for Automatic Gas and Oil Heating is entitled to perform specialty electrical installations after completing an accredited training and experience program recognized by the board; or having acceptable training and experience. The licensed person must pass a separate exam in the specialty selected, Automatic Gas and Oil Heating.

What are the requirements to getting a license?

Master Electrician License RequirementsType-S Journeyman Electrician: A1 & C3
  • Submit a complete application along with all fees.
  • Pass the journeyman exam along with the corresponding specialty exam (Vermont Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Electrical exam and/or Vermont Automatic Gas and Oil Heating exam).
  • Proof of the following for each specialty you apply for:
    • Completion of a recognized training program plus one year (2,000 hours) of experience through signed affidavits.
    • OR

    • two years (4,000 hours) of experience through signed affidavits.

How do I obtain a license?

To apply for your license, contact the Vermont Division of Fire Safety at 801-530-6628 or visit their website.

15 hours of continuing education is required each licensing period prior to renewal. Vermont has reciprocity agreements with Maine and New Hampshire.

How do I pass the exam?

The Vermont exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
