Journeyman / Master Electrician Licensing & Exam Prep

Journeyman Electrician
A Journeyman Electrician is licensed to perform electrical installations under the direction of a master electrician, and may supervise an apprentice electrician or an electrician's helper employed by a master electrician under the Master Electrician's direction.

Master Electrician
A Master Electrician is able to design, install, repair, maintain, and replace electrical installations including lightning rods, fire alarms, and fire detection systems as his or her principal business or in the course of another business conducted by him or her, and may employ other persons licensed under this chapter or electrician's helpers to perform work in connection with electrical installations under his or her direction.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Journeyman Electrician- Pass the Electrical Theory and Electrician Practical exams
- Applicants must verify 12,000 hours of experience via:
- Providing verification by the Vermont apprenticeship council of completion of an apprenticeship in electrical wiring which included both instruction and practice in work processes
OR - Have had an equivalent training and experience, within or without this state, acceptable to the board
Master Electrician- Pass the Electrical Theory and Electrician Practical exams
- Applicants must verify 16,000 hours of experience via:
- Have been licensed as a journeyman electrician under this chapter for at least two (2) years
OR - Have had an equivalent training and experience, within or without this state, acceptable to the board
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Vermont Division of Fire Safety at 801-530-6628 or visit their website.
15 hours of continuing education is required each licensing period prior to renewal. Vermont has reciprocity agreements with Maine and New Hampshire.

How do I pass the exam?
The Vermont exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
