Residential Journeyman & Master Electrician Licensing & Exam Prep

Utah contractors may hold one of many types of licenses, each specializing in either a specific trade or in a general scope of Building, Engineering, Residential, or Commercial work. This page outlines the requirements and abilities of Residential Journeyman and Master Electricians. Once the license is obtained, licensees must complete 16 hours of continuing education prior to each license renewal.

Licensed Residential Electrician in Utah
  • Residential Journeyman Electrician

    A Residential Journeyman Electrician is licensed to wire, install, and repair electrical apparatus and equipment for light, heat, power, and other purposes on buildings using primarily nonmetallic sheath cable.

  • Residential Master Electrician

    A Residential Master Electrician is licensed to properly plan, layout, and supervise the wiring, installation, and repair of electrical apparatus and equipment for light, heat, power, and other purposes on residential projects.

What are the requirements to getting a license?

In addition to passing the Electrical Code, Electrical Theory, and Electrician Practical exams, applicants must also:

  • Complete a 2-year board approved apprenticeship program and have 4,000 hours of verifiable electrical experience
    OR
  • Provide evidence of apprenticeship with 8,000 hours of verifiable electrical experience

  • Pass the Electrical Code, Electrical Theory, and Electrician Practical exams
  • A minimum of at least 4,000 hours of required practice as a licensed Residential Journeyman Electrician
    • Journeyman Electrician license holders do not need to retake the practical exam

How do I obtain a license?

To apply for your license, contact the Utah The Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing at 801-530-6628 or visit their website.

16 hours of continuing education is required each licensing period prior to renewal. Utah has reciprocity agreements for Journeyman with Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Oregon. They have reciprocity at the Master level for Idaho, Oregon, and Wyoming.

PASS THE STATE EXAM

Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities. Pre-approval is required from the testing agency prior to scheduling the exam

Licensure by reciprocity is also avaliable with the NASCLA Exam. The examination must be accompanied by a 12-month license issued in the state to which the exam was used.

Residential Electrician Theory Exam

  • Questions: 50
  • Passing Score: 38 correct
  • Time: 115 / 100 minutes (Journeyman/Master)

Topics Include: Voltage; Current; Resistance; Power; Voltage Drop


Residential Electrician Practical Exam

  • Number of Tasks: 4
  • Test is Pass or Fail, questions are all graded as one.
  • Time: 70 minutes

Topics Include: Torque Setting; Evaporative Cooler Motor Wiring (residential) (use of schematic diagram); 4-way & 3-way Light Switch Wiring; Schematic Reading & Wiring

How do I pass the exam?

The Utah exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
