Utah Electrician License Exam Prep
Journeyman & Master Electrician Licensing & Exam Prep
Utah contractors may hold one of many types of licenses, each specializing in either a specific trade or in a general scope of Building, Engineering, or Commercial work. This page outlines the requirements and abilities of Journeyman and Master Electricians in Utah. Once the license is obtained, licensees must complete 16 hours of continuing education prior to each license renewal.

Journeyman Electrician
A Journeyman Electrician has the qualifications and experience to wire, install, and repair electrical apparatus and equipment for light, heat, power, and other purposes.

Master Electrician
A Master Electrician is licensed to properly plan, layout, and supervise the wiring, installation, and repair of electrical apparatus and equipment for light, heat, power, and other purposes.
What are the licensing requirements in Utah?
Journeyman ElectricianIn addition to passing the Electrical Code, Electrical Theory, and Electrician Practical exams, applicants must also:
- Complete a board approved apprenticeship program and have 8,000 hours of verifiable electrical experience in 4 years
OR - Provide evidence of apprenticeship with 16,000 hours of verifiable electrical experience in 8 years in collaboration with the Electricians Licensing Board
Master ElectricianIn addition to passing the Electrical Code, Electrical Theory, and Electrician Practical exams, applicants must also:
- 4 years of experience as a licensed Journeyman Electrician
OR - 2 years’ AAS degree from a properly accredited electrical trade school AND 2 years’ experience as a licensed Journeyman Electrician
OR - BS degree in electrical engineering from an EAC/ABET accredited school AND one years of licensed experience
- Journeyman Electrician license holders do not need to retake the practical exam
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Utah The Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing at 801-530-6628 or visit their website.
16 hours of continuing education is required each licensing period prior to renewal. Utah has reciprocity agreements for Journeyman with Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Oregon. They have reciprocity at the Master level for Idaho, Oregon, and Wyoming.

Licensure by reciprocity is also avaliable with the NASCLA Exam. The examination must be accompanied by a 12-month license issued in the state to which the exam was used.

Electrician Theory Exam
- Questions: 50
- Passing Score: 38 correct
- Time: 115 / 100 minutes (Journeyman/Master)

Topics Include: Voltage; Current; Resistance; Power; Voltage Drop
Electrician Practical Exam
- Questions: 6
- Test is Pass or Fail, questions are all graded as one.
- Time: 60 minutes

Topics Include: Torque setting; Transformer termination; Conduit Bending (canidates will bend two pieces of conduit using a 3 & 4 point bends); Motor Control (commercial)(use of ladder diagram); 4-way & 3-way switch wiring; Schematic reading & wiring
Practical Exam Materials
The following items must be brought to the practical examination:
- Two 5-foot pieces of 1/2 inch EMT conduit
- One 1/2-inch EMT bender
- One continuity tester or multi meter
- One 1/2-inch conduit reamer
- One straight blade screwdriver
- One pair of long nose pliers
- One pair of side cut pliers
- One pair of wire strippers
- One hacksaw or cordless saw
- One tape measure
- One pencil or marker
- Non-digital torpedo level
How do I pass the exam?
The Utah exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
