Journeyman Electrician License
A Journeyman Electrician is a person having the necessary qualifications, training, technical knowledge and at least four years' experience in wiring, installing, and repairing electrical apparatus and equipment in accordance with the standard rules established by the State Electrical Commission.

Electrical Contractor License
A licensed Master Electrician in South Dakota is a person having the necessary qualifications, training, experience, and technical knowledge to plan, lay out, and supervise the installation and repair of electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment for electric light, heat and power in accordance with the standard rules governing such work; and who undertakes or offers to undertake with another to plan for, lay out, supervise and install or to make additions, alterations and repairs in the installation of such work.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Journeyman Electrician- Submit signed and completed application to the South Dakota State Electrical Board
- Pass the Journeyman Electrical exam
- Four (4) years (for a total of 8,000 hours) as an apprentice working under an electrical contractor.
Electrical Contractor- Submit signed and completed application to the South Dakota State Electrical Board
- Pass the Electrical Contractor Electrical exam
- Two (2) years as a journeyman (with a total of 4,000 hours of additional work under a contractor, including a minimum of 2,000 hours of commercial work.
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the South Dakota Electrical Commission at 605-773-3573 or visit the website.
The state requires 16 hours of continuing education prior to each renewal. Also, South Dakota has limited reciprocity agreements for Journeyman with Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah. Master licenses have agreements with Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Wyoming.

How do I pass the exam?
The South Dakota exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
