Journeyperson Plumber License
A licensed Journeyperson Plumber in Rhode Island may install plumbing fixtures, bathtubs, showers, sinks, and toilets as well as appliances, maintain and repair many different types of pipe systems, and follow building plans or blueprints and instructions from supervisors. They must work under the direction of a licensed Master Plumber.

A licensed Master Plumber may engage in nearly any plumbing project and may work without supervision.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Journeyperson Plumber - 4 years’ experience as an apprentice
- 8,000 hours of on-the-job training, including 576 hours of instruction approved by the Department of Labor and Training
- Submit Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship
- An affidavit showing the applicant has been registered in a college, university, or trade school and has pursued a course of plumbing or sanitary engineering for at least 2 years, OR
- the applicant has an associates degree in plumbing or sanitary engineering, and has been registered as a plumbing apprentice for at least 2 years, OR
- evidence showing that the applicant possesses a certificate of license, issued under the laws of another state, provided that the requirements are the same.

How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Rhode Island Professional Regulation Unit at 401-462-8000 or visit the board website.
The state requires 15 hours of continuing education prior to each renewal. Also, Rhode Island has no reciprocity agreements.

Which exam do I need to take?
Applicants may submit an Application for Examination and Apprenticeship to the Board of Examiners for Plumbers. Once approved, applicants will be able to select a time and date to sit for the exam.
Journeyperson / Master Plumbing exam
- 50 multiple choice questions
- Time: 90 minutes
- Plumbing exams are approved and administered by the state. A score of 70% is required to pass.
Topics Include: Terminology and Calculations, Materials and Material Standards, Joints and Connections, Traps and Cleanouts, Plumbing Fixtures, Hangers and Supports, Indirect Waste Piping, Water Distribution Systems, Sanitary Drainage Systems, Vents and Venting Systems, Cross Connections, Storm Drains,Related Subjects and Inspecting and Testing.
How do I pass the exam?
The Rhode Island exams are CLOSED book. The exam is based on the references found below and can be used to help you prepare for the exam. Our exam prep covers all the necessary information if you don't own or want to purchase a copy of the references. Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
