What type of work can be done with this license?

General Supervising Electrician
A Journeyman Electrician in Oregon may design, plan, and lay out work and sign all permits and is the only individual with authorization to control, direct, or supervise the alteration or installation of an electrical service.

General Journeyman Electrician
A Journeyman Electrician in Oregon may make any electrical installation under the supervision, direction, and control of a general supervising electrician, unless doing work that requires the direction of a limited supervising electrician or doing work requiring no supervision.

Limited Residential Electrician
A Journeyman Electrician in Oregon may make electrical installations on one- and two-family or multi-family dwelling units, not exceeding three floors above grade. Must work under the supervision, direction, and control of a general supervising electrician.

Electrical Contractor
An Electrical Contractor in Oregon allows a company to engage in the business of making electrical installations. The electrical contractor is still required to be licensed and bonded by the Construction Contractors Board.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
General Supervising Electrician- Hold a current Oregon Journeyman Electrician license and provide documentation of an additional 8,000 hours of on-the-job journeyman experience OR
- Meet Oregon Journeyman Electrician license qualifications and provide documentation of an additional 8,000 hours of on-the-job journeyman experience
General Journeyman Electrician- Completion of an approved apprenticeship program in Oregon OR
- Verified 576 hours of classroom training and 8,000 hours of on-the-job experience obtained outside of Oregon. Experience must include a breakdown of hours, showing a minimum of 1,000 hours in each category: residential, commercial, and industrial. (300 percent rule applies)
Limited Residential Electrician- Completion of an approved apprenticeship program in Oregon OR
- Verified 288 hours of classroom training and 4,000 hours of on-the-job residential experience obtained outside of Oregon. OR
- Verified 8,000 hours of on-the-job residential experience obtained outside of Oregon. (300 percent rule applies) For more details see OAR 918-282-0180.
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Oregon BCD at 503-378-4133 or visit oregon.gov/bcd.
Oregon requires each licensee to complete Continuing education prior to each renewal. Oregon has reciprocity agreements with Arkansas and Utah for General Supervising Electrician.

In order to sit for the exam, you must submit the application for licensure to the state. It must include verified education and work experience as required by the state. Once approved, the state will contact you with an exam date and time.
After studying with RocketCert, you will be on your way to passing the required State exam(s) (see below). Pre-approval is required. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities.

Which exam do I need to take?
Upon approval of the submitted application packet, the state will contact you with an exam date and location.
The General Supervising Electrician, General Journeyman Electrician, and Limited Residential Electrician take the same exam.
The Contractor exam and 16 hour pre-license course is required to become an Electrical Contractor

The Oregon Electrician exam is open book. References are permitted to be tabbed and highlighted!
