Refrigeration Licensing, Education & Exam Prep
Ohio requires a Refrigeration Contractor license prior to bidding on or contracting refrigeration work. Applicants may choose to renew the license annually or every 3 years. Refrigeration Contractor
A Refrigeration Contractor in Ohio is able to to install, maintain, repair or alter any system of refrigeration unlimited to tons or horsepower provided, however, that such refrigeration is intended to be used for the purpose of food and product preservation and is not to be used for comfort systems.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Experience- Proof of last five years as a Tradesperson, working under a licensed Contractor, performing permittable work. OR currently be a registered engineer in this state with three (3) years of business experience in the construction industry in the Refrigeration trade.
- Provide the last five consecutive years tax documents (W-2 or IRS Schedule C Form 1040)
- Provide one of the four options below to accompany your tax documents:
- Copy of 1 permit for each of the last 5 years the licensed contractor (your employer) obtained, and that the applicant worked under.
- Journeyman's card
- Certificate of Completion for Apprenticeship from an apprentice program approved by the state of Ohio or the US Department of Labor
- Proof of completion for 40 hours of continuing education on code for the Refrigeration trade
Other Requriements- Pass Refrigeration and Business and Law exams
- Proof of Insurance ($500,000 liability minimum)
- Once approved by the Board, complete a State and Federal Background Check prior to sitting for the examination.
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board at 614-644-3493 or visit ohio.gov.
Ohio requires each licensee to complete Continuing education prior to each renewal. Ohio has reciprocity agreements with Kentucky, Louisiana, and Tennessee

In order to sit for the exam, you must submit the application for licensure to the state. It must include verified education and work experience as required by the state. Once approved, the state will contact you with an exam bulletin.
After studying with RocketCert, you will be on your way to passing the required State exam(s) (see below). Pre-approval is required. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities.
After completing all the steps above, it will be time to apply through the OCILB to obtain your Ohio Refrigeration License. Licensees must provide proof of insurance at this time. Ohio Refrigeration Contractors must pass two examinations.

How do I pass the exam?
The Ohio Refrigeration exam is open book. This reference is permitted to be tabbed and highlighted! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
