What type of work can be done with this license?

  • Special Restricted Fire Alarm / Low Voltage (FALV) Classification

    A fire alarm/low voltage electrical contractor license authorizes the licensee to install, maintain, or repair only low voltage wiring and directly related wiring.
    Wiring is directly related if it originates at the load-side terminals of a disconnecting means or junction box that:


      (a) has been installed, complete with line-side connections, by others for the purpose of supplying the low voltage wiring system involved; and

      (b) permanently and legibly marked to identify the low voltage wiring system supplied; and

      (c) not installed in a location considered as hazardous under the National Electrical Code.

What are the North Carolina low voltage license requirements?

To take the exam, you must first meet these requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Submit a completed application and pay all fees
  • With the application, submit written statements from at least 2 people attesting to the applicants good character
  • Must have at least 3,000 hours of experience:
    • at least 2,000 hours shall be primary experience.
    • The balance of experience may be primary, secondary or both.
  • Information verifying that the applicant is conducting a lawful business in the State of North Carolina

How do I obtain a license?

To apply, contact the NC State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors at 919-733-9042 or visit ncbeec.org. These licenses must be renewed on a yearly basis.

Submit Application

In order to sit for the exam, you must submit the application for licensure to the state. It must include verified education and work experience as required by the state. Once the application is approved, the you will receive instructions on how to schedule the exam. The exam must be taken within 30 days of receiving the notification letter.

PASS THE STATE EXAM

After studying with RocketCert, you will be on your way to passing the required State exam(s) (see below). Pre-approval is required. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities.
