What type of work can be done with this license?

Licensed Plumbing in Minnesota
  • Journeyworker Plumbing License

    A licensed Journeyworker Plumber is engaged as an employee of, or is otherwise working under the direction of, a Master Plumber in the practical installation of plumbing. The individual may work statewide, for both interior plumbing and exterior water service, sanitary sewer and storm sewer systems within the property lines.

  • Master Plumbing License

    A Master Plumber in Minnesota can engage in the planning, superintending and the practical installation of plumbing, to contract for plumbing and installations and to conduct the business of plumbing. The individual may perform plumbing statewide, for both interior plumbing and exterior water service, sanitary sewer and storm sewer systems within the property lines.

  • Plumbing Contractor License

    A Plumbing Contractor may contract to perform or offer to perform plumbing work in all areas of the state provided the contractor has at all times a licensed Master Plumber as a responsible individual and maintains compliance with the required bond, general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance requirements

What are the requirements to getting a license?

  • Submit completed, signed, and notarized application with appropriate fees
  • Schedule exam after approval letter is received

And satisfy at least one of the following criteria:

  • At least four years of recorded practical plumbing experience as a DLI-registered unlicensed plumber
    OR
  • Completed a DLI-registered apprenticeship program
    OR
  • A current Minnesota restricted journeyworker plumber license or a restricted master plumber license and at least two years of practical plumbing experience gained while holding the restricted plumber license
    OR
  • A current plumber’s license from another state where the licensing jurisdiction requires at least four years of practical plumbing experience and an examination to qualify for licensure.

And satisfy at least one of the following criteria:

  • At least one year of practical plumbing experience as a licensed journeyworker plumber
    OR
  • A current master plumber license from another state where the requirements of the licensing jurisdiction are equivalent to those of Minnesota as determined by DLI
    OR
  • A current Minnesota restricted master plumber license and five years of verifiable experience in business as a plumbing contractor in Minnesota.

  • Disclose Business Owners, Partners, Officers, and Members
  • Provide proof of Surety Bond
  • Provide proof of insurance

    • Unemployment Compensation Certificate
  • Provide Certificate of Responsible Licensed Individual (Master Plumber or Restricted Master Plumber)
  • Submit completed, signed, and notarized application with appropriate licensing fee

How do I obtain a license?

To apply for your license, contact the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry Construction Codes and Licensing Division at 651-284-5012 or visit DLI website.

The state requires 16 hours of continuing education prior to each renewal, and 4 of those hours may be taken online. Also, Minnesota has reciprocity agreements with North Dakota and South Dakota. .

PASS THE STATE EXAM

The Department of Labor and Industry will notify the applicant once an applicant has been approved to take the examination. The applicant will apply to sit for the exam on the state board website. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities. Pre-approval is required from the state prior to scheduling the exam.

How do I pass the exam?

The Minnesota exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam. The current statutes and codes and a standard desktop calculator are provided for use during the examination.
