Journeyman Plumber / Gasfitter License
Journeyman Plumber / Gasfitters are permitted to construct, install, alter, repair of any plumbing in the city and to install, alter, repair any atmospheric burner, power burner not exceeding one hundred thousand (100,000) btu's, fuel gas piping, combustion air piping, fuel gas venting and gas burner equipment. Exception: a journeyman plumber/gas fitter, under the direct supervision of a master gas fitter, may install, alter, repair any power burner. At no time may a journeyman plumber/ gas fitter install, alter, or repair any environmental burner.

Master Plumber / Gasfitter License
A Master Plumber / Gasfitter is permitted to install, alter, repair of any plumbing in the city and to install, alter, repair any atmospheric burner, power burner not exceeding one hundred thousand (100,000) btu's, fuel gas piping, combustion air piping, fuel gas venting and gas burner equipment. Exception: a master plumber/gas fitter, under the direct supervision of a master gas fitter, may install, alter, repair any power burner. At no time may a master plumber/ gas fitter install, alter, or repair any environmental burner.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Journeyman Plumber / Gasfitter- Applicants must have passed the state of Minnesota Plumber's License exam at the journeyman or master level
- Applicants may only apply for the same level of Minneapolis plumber / gas fitter certificate as the State of Minnesota plumber's license they currently hold
- Submit a complete Application for Eligibility
- Proof of 1600 hours of fuel gas related on-the-job experience or education
- This may include: classroom education/training, trade association / manufacturer training programs, or self study materials used under the supervision of a sponsor
- Pass the Minneapolis Journeyman or Master Plumber / Gasfitter Exam
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the City of Minneapolis Competency Card Office at 612-673-3000 or visit City of Minneapolis website.
Minneapolis Certificates of Competency expire one year from the date you passed your exam. Minneapolis has reciprocity agreements for Competency cards with Saint Paul, Minnesota.

How do I pass the exam?
The Minnesota exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam. The current statutes and codes and a standard desktop calculator are provided for use during the examination.
The exam prep includes math, isometrics, highlighting guides covering the topics your exam is based on, practice questions for each references, and unlimited attempts on our "test simulation".
