Licensed Journeyman / Master Electrician and Electrical Contractor in West Virginia
  • Journeyman Electrician

    A Journeyman Electrician in West Virginia is licensed to do any work installing wires, conduits, apparatus, equipment, fixtures and other appliances, provided that this classification is not authorized to design electrical systems.

  • Master Electrician

    A Master Electrician in West Virginia is able to design electrical systems and to instruct and supervise the electrical work of journeyman electricians, apprentice electricians, and other related workers.

  • Electrical Contractor

    A Electrical Contractor in West Virginia engages in the business of electrical work and employs master electricians, journeyman electricians, apprentice electricians or other related workers for the construction, alteration or repair of any electrical wiring, equipment or systems as defined in the scope of the national electric code.

What are the requirements to getting a license?

West Virginia Journeyman Electrician RequirementsJourneyman Electrician
  • A minimum of 8,000 hours or 4 years’ actual, hands-on work electrical work experience and shall consist of:
    • All work experience must be in accordance with the NEC and consist of above ground structural wiring
      OR
    • Completion of a US Department of Labor approved apprentice program
      OR
    • Completion of a West Virginia Department of Education approved 1080-hour vocational course.
  • Schedule exam through the West Virginia State Office of the Fire Marshall
  • Submit completed, signed, and notarized application with appropriate licensing fee
West Virginia Master Electrician RequirementsMaster Electrician
  • A minimum of 10,000 hours or 5 years’ actual, hands-on work electrical work experience and shall consist of:
    • Work should be a combination of commercial, industrial, and residential experience.
    • Vocational training is not counted toward required experience.
    • All work experience must be in accordance with the NEC and consist of above ground structural wiring
  • Schedule exam through the West Virginia State Office of the Fire Marshall
  • Submit completed, signed, and notarized application with appropriate licensing fee

  • Pass West Virginia Business and Law and Electrical Contractor Exam
  • Register the business with the West Virginia State Tax Department
  • Provide Certificate of Authority (if required)
  • Provide Wage Bond

  • Submit completed, signed, and notarized application with appropriate licensing fee

How do I obtain a license?

West Virginia does not require each licensee to complete Continuing Education prior to each renewal. West Virginia has reciprocity arrangements on an individual basis.

Submit Application

In order to sit for the exam, you must submit the application for licensure to the state. It must include verified education and work experience as required by the state. Once approved, the state will contact you with an exam date and time.

PASS THE STATE EXAM(S)

After studying with RocketCert, you will be on your way to passing the required State exam(s) (see below). Pre-approval is required. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities.

APPLY FOR YOUR LICENSE

After completing all the steps above, it will be time to apply through the Contractor Licensing Board to obtain your West Virginia General Contractor License. Which exam do I need to take?

Applicants may choose between two options:

The state-specific exam OR the NASCLA Accredited Electrical Exam

The NASCLA Electrical Exam is Currently Accepted by 15 state licensing boards as a substitute for the state's trade exam. For a full list of accepting agencies Click Here.

Note: As of September 2024, the West Virginia contractor licensing exams will be administered by ProV Exams. The previous references for the exams administered by PSI may still be used until April 2025.

How do I pass the exam?
