Commercial / Residential Licensing & Exam Prep
South Carolina requires all Contractors to obtain a license before any bidding or work can take place. The Business Management & Law test accompanies the commercial and residential contractor exams as a requirement for licensure. The type of license you are applying for will determine which exam you are required to take. Consult the exam bulletin for your desired license for more information. How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the South Carolina CLB at 803-896-4686 or visit Contractor License Board.
The state requires no continuing education prior to each renewal. Also, South Carolina has reciprocity agreements for certain licenses. A complete list of their reciprocity agreements can be found here.

The Commission will notify the applicant and PSI once an applicant has been approved to take the examination. The applicant will contact PSI to schedule the examination. Apply to sit for the exam on the state board website. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities. Pre-approval is required from the testing agency prior to scheduling the exam.

Which exam do I need to take?
South Carolina Contractors must pass two examinations: their Trade and Business & Law.
Commercial and residential licenses take different Business & Law exams.

In addition to the Business and Law Exam, the appropriate trade or construction exam must be passed.
How do I pass the exam?
The South Carolina exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
