Class A/B Electrical Contractor / Journeyperson Licensing & Exam Prep
Rhode Island requires all Electricians to obtain a license before any bidding or work can take place. Class A Electrical Contractor License
Class A Electricians work with blueprints when they install electrical systems in factories, office buildings, homes, and other structures. Blueprints indicate the locations of circuits, outlets, load centers, panel boards, and other equipment. Electricians must follow the National Electric Code and comply with State and local building codes when they install these systems.

Class B Electrical Journeyperson License
Class B Electricians install, connect, test, and maintain electrical systems for a variety of purposes, including climate control, security, and communications. They also may install and maintain the electronic controls for machines in business and industry. Although most electricians specialize in construction or maintenance, a growing number do both.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Class A / Electrical Contractor - Drivers License or State ID
- 6 years of Experience, 2 of those years as an Electrical Journeyperson
Class B / Electrical Journeyperson - Drivers License or State ID
- 4 years’ experience
- 576 hours of related instruction
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Rhode Island Professional Regulation Unit at 401-462-8000 or visit the board website.
The state requires 15 hours of continuing education prior to each renewal. Also, Rhode Island has no reciprocity agreements.

Which exam do I need to take?
Applicants may submit an Application for Examination and Apprenticeship to the Board of Examiners. Once approved, applicants will be able to select a time and date to sit for the exam.
Electrical exam
- Electrical exams are approved and administered by the state. A score of 70% is required to pass.
How do I pass the exam?
The Rhode Island exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
