What type of work can be done with this license?

Licensed Electrician in Rhode Island
  • Class A Electrical Contractor License

    Class A Electricians work with blueprints when they install electrical systems in factories, office buildings, homes, and other structures. Blueprints indicate the locations of circuits, outlets, load centers, panel boards, and other equipment. Electricians must follow the National Electric Code and comply with State and local building codes when they install these systems.

  • Class B Electrical Journeyperson License

    Class B Electricians install, connect, test, and maintain electrical systems for a variety of purposes, including climate control, security, and communications. They also may install and maintain the electronic controls for machines in business and industry. Although most electricians specialize in construction or maintenance, a growing number do both.

How do I obtain a license?

To apply for your license, contact the Rhode Island Professional Regulation Unit at 401-462-8000 or visit the board website.

The state requires 15 hours of continuing education prior to each renewal. Also, Rhode Island has no reciprocity agreements.

PASS THE STATE EXAM

Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities. Pre-approval is required from the testing agency prior to scheduling the exam

Which exam do I need to take?

Applicants may submit an Application for Examination and Apprenticeship to the Board of Examiners. Once approved, applicants will be able to select a time and date to sit for the exam.
